As per title, I'm buying a set of 18" alloys for my Mk2 2.3 Galaxy but in the 235x40x18 size I can only get a 95 rated tyre. This is within the load rating of the car but I would like to get a 97 rated tyre if possible and these are available in 245x40x18 size.

I know a few people on here have 235 width tyres, but I just wondered if anyone was running on 245 width tyres as I am a bit concerned that these may rub on the inner lip of the wheel arch especially as my Galaxy is due to be fitted with -50mm springs on Friday.

Any info from anyone?

cheers

adrianf the -50mm springs will be done on Friday which will get rid of the current 4x4 Land Rover look and the wheels will be fitted at the weekend with either the 235 or 245 x18" tyres. I'm going for the 12 spoke Audi A8 style wheel instead of the usual RS6 style that a fair number of people have gone for. The RS6 does look good but I think with the A8 wheel having the long fairly thin spokes it will make the wheel look a wee bit bigger and should look good on the Galaxy. I've not seen any other Galaxy/Sharhambra's with the A8 wheels so I'm relying on my imagination as to how its gonna look!

If I can work out how to post pics on this site I'll get some photos up this weekend of the finished article.

Hi

I have just recently fitted 235's on 18" RS6 Wheels with a 42 offset and it is lowered by a 35mm eibach kit. The shop I bought the wheels from (and a few others) said I could get away with a 35 offset but I feel these would have stuck out to much and given me problems, especially on the front. I would imagine with the right offset 245's would be ok but not with a 35 offset.

thanks for the info regarding the offset. Someone else had mentioned that the 35's would stick out too far, so I've gone ahead and bought the A8 style wheel with a 42 offset. I've gone for the 235x40x18 tyre to be on the safe side regards arch rubbing. When the time comes to replace these tyres I'll make a decision about going to the 245.

I'm hoping the new -50mm springs will make a big difference not only to the look of the car, but to the handling as its lowering the centre of gravity a fair bit.

You will notice a big improvement with a wider stance, wider rubber and lowered, I was concerned the ride would be to harsh but very pleased with the result.

yeah Adrian I had thought about asking them to deliver another set but I dont have the packaging they sent my original wheels in so their courier wouldnt collect them. Plus I'd rather turn up at the shop and get the new wheels fitted to ensure there's no problem with these ones. With them being replicas, for some reason the offset isnt stamped onto the wheel, all thats on them is ET but no number following it. I would say it was almost impossible to tell if its a 35 or 45 offset just by visually looking at the wheel so I dont want to risk another mix up in the shop.

I actually tried measuring the offset myself last night and I was unable to get an accurate measurement so its probably safer just facing the 150 mile roundtrip to ensure I get the correct wheels this time.

On the plus side, I've done a good bit of varied driving today for the 1st time with the -50mm G Max progressive springs and they are fantastic, no more rolypoly Galaxy through the twisty corners. I highly recommend anyone shelling out 135 of our good british pounds for a set.

Oh while I remember, I won a tenner on the Lottery last night!

For future reference ET is offset, normally an ET with a P after means the hub mounting face is inside of the wheel centre ie the wheel will stick out more, the Galaxy's ET of on mine 49 means more of the wheel pushes in to the arch.

The Wheel and tyre bible page 2

if you scroll down it also has a very useful calculator so you can get your ET/Offset correct.

As a rule of thumb if you increase the width of your wheel by say 10mm and the offset is the same then 5mm will go out and 5mm in, if you also change the offset then you can move all 10mm in or out depending on the new offset.

Ultimately if you go to wide yopu will hit both the wing edge and the inner arch but with a bit of jiggery pokery you should be able to go wide with little problems..

Apart from when you scrub the tyres on the inner wing on full lock, then you need to put stops on the rack.

I drive a taxi which is lowered 50 on the normal tyres and the handling is great sticks like s**t to a blanket

If you change to 18"'s with a wider tyre, you'll get even more s**t sticking to that blanket.
